Is colour-depositing shampoo safe in general?
Yes, when formulated without PPD, ammonia, peroxide and harsh sulfates. Rehues contains none of those. Pigment molecules sit on the hair cuticle and rinse clean; they do not penetrate the hair cortex or the scalp’s deeper layers.
What’s inside (and what isn’t)
Not in Rehues:
- PPD (p-phenylenediamine) — the most common allergen in box dye.
- Ammonia — used to lift the cuticle for permanent dye.
- Peroxide — used to oxidise dye into the hair shaft.
- Sulfates (SLS, SLES) — harsh cleansers that strip colour.
- Animal-derived ingredients.

FAQ: Safety by life stage
Can I use it during pregnancy?
Unlike permanent hair dye, Rehues has no ammonia, no peroxide and no PPD — the ingredients most often flagged during pregnancy. That said, every pregnancy is unique. We strongly recommend sharing our full ingredient list with your OB-GYN before use, and starting with a strand test. Many of our customers do continue using Rehues throughout pregnancy for exactly the reason that it’s gentler than box dye.
Is it safe during breastfeeding?
Pigment sits on the cuticle surface, not your bloodstream. There’s no known route of transfer to breast milk. Again: always show your doctor the ingredient list if unsure.
Can kids use it?
Rehues wasn’t specifically developed for children. We don’t recommend it for under-12s. For teens, a strand test first is smart — even gentle pigments can occasionally trigger a sensitivity in new users.
Is it halal?
We do not currently hold a halal certification. That said, Rehues contains no animal-derived ingredients, and pigments sit on the surface of the hair — water still passes through, as with any shampoo. Many Muslim customers use it. Requirements differ by individual and interpretation; we always encourage checking with someone you trust using our full ingredient list.
Is it vegan?
We use no animal-derived ingredients. Our formulas are mostly synthetic and plant-based. We’re in the process of formalising vegan certification.
Is it cruelty-free?
We do not test on animals.
Common concerns, direct answers
Will it stain my pillow, towels, or skin?
Not once your hair is fully dry and rinsed clean. During application, wear gloves if you have polished nails (polish is porous). Pigment won’t bond to bedding once hair is dry.
Is daily use okay?
Yes. Rehues is gentle enough for daily wash cycles, but we usually recommend 2–3× a week for colour maintenance. Over-depositing can darken your tone beyond your target.
Can it damage my hair?
No. Rehues contains bond-repair actives that actually strengthen hair over time. It does not open the cuticle, oxidise proteins or alter the hair’s underlying structure.
Will it cover white roots?
For most hair types, yes — Brown and Black Tea shades work best. Coverage results vary depending on how stubborn your roots are.
Does it work on black hair?
No. Rehues doesn’t contain lightening agents, so it can’t brighten dark hair. It’s designed for lightened, toned, bleached or previously coloured hair.
I have a sensitive scalp. Can I use it?
Sophora Root Extract — our signature botanical — is used in traditional medicine to soothe scalp irritation. Many sensitive-scalp customers who react to box dye tell us Rehues is the first pigmented shampoo they can use comfortably. Strand test first if in doubt.
What if I’m allergic to something in a box dye — can I still use this?
Most box-dye allergies are triggered by PPD. Rehues is PPD-free. That doesn’t guarantee no reaction, but it removes the most common culprit. We always recommend a 48-hour patch test behind your ear before first use.
How to do a strand test (30 seconds)
- Pick a small section underneath your hair — near the nape, where it won’t show.
- Apply a small amount of Rehues Colour Lock™ Shampoo.
- Leave for your preferred time (3 min for light, 10–15 min for intense).
- Rinse. Dry. Check for colour, texture, and any scalp sensitivity.
